It's only a game...a game about playing a massively multiplayer online role-playing game...
Plot
You play as a player who is just introducing himself to a MMPORPG called "The World." Your friend, a veteran player and your mentor of the game, mysteriously falls into a coma after his game character is killed...and the reason behind his incapacitation lies within the game, which is mysteriously ridden with viruses. You must infilitrate the dungeons and rid of the parasitic evil, in hopes of finding a cure for the plight of your friend.
Graphics
There are many different kinds of fields and dungeons, including grasslands, snowfields, deserts, dry sea basins, etc., and you'll infilitrate ruins, castles, palaces, even dragons' bodies.
In viral infected levels, the screen flickers, and programming code floats about through the area.
Sound
The music is very trance-like, white-noise if you will, but not necessarily purely ambient; it is constant, but not monotonous...
Definitely a plus on the part of the developer, you are offered the choice of English or Japanese voice-overs with English subtitles...the English voice-overs can definitely be embarrassing to listen to at times.
Gameplay
You check e-mail and read message board posts for objectives, which are updated with each mission.
The game is very open-ended; in manner, you can "create" your own dungeons by inputting keywords at portals, which specify the strength of the enemies, and the value of treasures within the dungeon. Naturally, greater rewards mean greater risks. E-mails and message board posts will tell you different keyword combinations for dungeons related to side quests and advancing the story, but if you want to level build like crazy too, you can input intense keyword combinations for dungeons with insanely powerful enemies and valuable treasure.
Gathering allies and communicating with them is effectively reminiscent of real MMPORPGs, you have to meet them, and they gives you the means to contact them so that you can add or remove them from your party whenever you like; of course, allies aren't always available, and that is a strategic limiter. You can also give and trade items to and with your allies.
Battles are rather reminiscent of Star Ocean 2 and other action RPGs; just press the "X" button near an enemy to attack, or call up menus to use your skills or magic spells. You can also call up menus for your allies to use specific skills or spells, or you can specify certain general strategies that the AI can act upon.
Overall
If you want a game that effectively emulates a MMPORPG without actually being one, .Hack is your piece of cake. All of the nuances are there, including characters who make irrelevant comments about the state of the real world, or other things that do not relate to the game at all. NOTE: I have never played this game, this review is for the free DVD that comes packadged in it. Vol 1 of the .Hack//Liminality mini series. I would put the review in the DVD section but it was never available to buy alone. .hack//Liminality (called .hack//L throughout the rest of this review) is better then .hack//sign and FAR better then .hack//Legend of the Twilight Bracelet (the 2 other .hack anime) For those of you wanting to know Vol. 1 is 45 minutes long and has a .hack//Sign look NOT a .hack//legend look. The main difference between it and its counterparts is it takes place out of The World. I is the bi polar of .Hack//Sign which is about someone who is stuck in the game and in a coma on the outside trying to break out from the inside. This is instead about someone getting stuck in The World but it actually follows his girlfriend outside trying to find out whats going on. (confused yet? no? Your smarter then I thought!) anyway, his girlfriend Mai in Vol 1. is confronted by a strange middle aged man who you find out is the ex. president of the C.C. Corporation (guys who designed The World) anyway, He is attempting to find out how everyone is going in a coma, he comes across Mai who is unique cause she is the only person ever to wake up from it. In other words this is the opener for the series. But this is !NOT! a cheesy give-a-way spinoff mini series like youd expect, it has fantastic music, much better then .hack//Signs. (id mention .hack//Legend of the Twilight Bracelet, but its music sucked to begin with) anyway. Its also got beautifull animation, great dubbing, extras, and a suberb story, like i said it is the bipolar of sign. If you liked .hack//sign buy it. If you liked .hack//legend of thw twilight bracelett.. um you'll think this is the best thing since the wheel by comparison. Some things are too short--here's an example, September 17, 2004

I got .HACK//INFECTION for my birthday. I was so excited. However, after playing and finishing the game, I must admit I was kinda disapointed.
Everyone says how long, and complicated the storyline is. There are four different games, each continueing from where the previous one leaves off, but...no. Okay? No.
First of all, I completed the game and all it's sidequests in less than 25 hours, and I bought .hack full price of a normal new game, where it only contains a quarter of a real game. Yep, i got cheated.
And secondly, all the game is is sidequests. Really all you do is little missions that could have absolutely NOTHING to do with the storyline progression! Well, i guess its to get you into the whole virtual World vibe, but still.
But I still had fun with the game. For the (short) time it took for me to finish playing this, I had my fun. Like i said, you mainly to side-missions miles off the storyline direction, but it was still pretty cool.
If you want my opinion, you should buy this series of games, but wait a year or so until the price goes down, then get it. Each of the 4 games is so short that they could fit in all 4 volumes into one game--you wouldnt be wasting 50$ each for 1/4 a normal game. (as u probably noticed, the game length is my biggest beef) but its true! someone should protest to Bandai for that.
It was still a good game though, but never as good as the Chrono, Star Ocean, or Final Fantasy series.

This sequel to .hack Infection picks up where the first game left off - and even lets you import your character to continue the adventure! For new players, the game nicely provides you with all the mail messages, board posts and other content from the first game, so you can at least try to catch up a bit with the story. It provides you with a character up to the challenge of this next level.
In graphics, gameplay, user experience and interface, .mutation is exactly the same as .infection was. This game is a 'storyline expansion' to the first game, using the same engine. People unhappy with the first game probably won't buy the second game, so the audience for game 2 is pretty much self selecting. People who loved the first game and didn't want the experience to end will be thrilled. Instead of most games where you put hours of time and energy into a character, only to have the game stop, you can keep playing for weeks more. And of course, when you're through with this one, there'll be another one out in the fall!

My first reaction to this segment of the game was disappointment that they hadn't made any changes from .hack//infection. And a bit of irritation, since the first fight sequence is quite dark and I had some close moments. Then I found myself settling into the pattern again and enjoying the game as much as the original. In a sense, .hack is a game for RPG traditionalists, even though its premise is a self-aware model of a virtual reality game gone awry.
For those of you who are come lately, this game is a game about playing a virtual role game called 'The World.' This is much like the online games currently available, but with better immersion. Something has gone awry in the game and players are being attacked by mutated monsters that can leave them permanently comatose. Kite, BlackRose, and a host of other player characters form a team that undertake both the central game quests, and get to play in randomly generated dungeons as well for leveling up. There is also a set of side quests that provide a distraction from the occasionally tedious character development.
Story is managed by cut scenes. One of the very positive things about this series is that the developers did not give in to the current fascination with long running cut scenes that overwhelm the action. Essentially this a hack/slash/magic game with a novel plot within a plot, solid graphics, and interesting characters. It is part of an entire marketing approach that includes the game, an included OVA, a TV series, and a set of music CD's. While the game is not the best component (I like the series and the OVA better) it provides strong, interesting play.
The included segment of the OVA ("The Case of Yuki Aihara") is an extension of the first segment and takes place in the 'real' world, where a group of people are trying to find out why their friends are going into comas. This provides a nice balance to the fantasy environment of the game and the TV series. The DVD also includes some interesting interviews, but they come dangerously close to giving away too much of the plot, which will become more and more focused on the players and the conflict between their roles in both the game and the real world as .hack moves along. But, there promises to be plenty of monster slayage as well. And at the end of a long day, nothing satisfies like chopping up a giant glowing lizard with a whirling combination of knife thrusts.

If you found that you liked Infection, chances are still good you might despise Mutation.
The subsequent games frequently have a play time of under 10 hours each (at least to get all of the good items).
For the prices of PS2 games, you'd expect a bit more gametime such as the incredibly (and unfortunately) LONG Final Fantasy series. The whole Hack series can be shoved into one feature - four is spreading it too thin.
The gameplay is fun. Addictive even. Trading, leveling, email - all good.
The graphics are so-so. I kinda wish my character looked less like a mommy's boy - I envy the other characters.
The sound and music is great!
But just don't pay more than $20 for this game - It won't last the weekend.
If you want a good series PS2 Game, Xenosaga and its sequels will take that award.

Pro-Wrestling is based on Japanese wrestling rather than American. The game can be played in several modes selected in the "Match Make" menu; these include exhibition matches, championships, tournaments, or leagues separated by weight.[3] Depending on the mode chosen, different wrestling rings can be chosen to battle, as well as the referee and the time limit.[4] 26 real-life wrestlers are initially available, notably Jushin Liger, The Great Muta, Don Frye, Koji Kanemoto, Antonio Inoki, and Masahiro Chono.[5]
Each battle begins with the wrestlers' entrance sequence. Two types of controls can be chosen to fight. The default one uses the DualShock 2's analog sticks exclusively; the left one being pressed for movements and the right one for attacks. Pins are executed by tilting both sticks up; and pressing both sticks grabs the opponent, who can then be attacked or thrown depending on the way the right stick is tilted. The second type of controls, called "Type B", is closer to other fighting games and assigns pinning to the triangle button, grabbing to the square button, and punches and moves to the cross button. With Type B, the power of each move is determined by the level of pressure applied on the buttons. In both modes, the precise techniques available depend on the position and distance of the opponent, as well as a personal "tension meter" which builds up during battle. At any time, the D-pad can be used to change the angle of the camera.[3]

Wrestlers return to full health after each match, and the game keeps track of the time of victories and records with the PlayStation 2 internal clock. A memory card can be used to save progress, battle snapshots, and match videos; the latter of which can either be ten-second long instant replays or up to three entire "Best Bout" matches. Hidden features include collectible autograph pictures of the defeated wrestlers; and a few unlockable characters, among whom are two female models in bikinis.[3]

All Star Pro-Wrestling was announced in January 1999 as part of Square's desire to expand into more diverse game genres on the PlayStation 2 than their usual role-playing games.[2] While DreamFactory developed most of Square's previous fighting games (namely Tobal No. 1, Tobal 2, and Ehrgeiz), Square decided to develop a wrestling game internally as Dream Factory was already working on The Bouncer, another Square title.[3] The game was produced by Yusuke Hirata of Parasite Eve 2 fame, head of Square's Osaka-based fifth production team.[1] The score, which was never released in album form, consists mostly of rock music and was composed by Tsuyoshi Sekito, Kenichiro Fukui, and Kumi Tanioka.[6][7][8]
Square's aim with the title was to create some of the most realistic wrestlers seen in video games, with accurate details such as a faithful replication of body-muscle physics and facial expressions.[9] Screenshots of the game were shown during the Square Millennium Event in Japan in 2000; and a battle was played in demonstration by Yusuke Hirata and a young Japanese idol later in the same year at the Tokyo Game Show.[10][11]

The Bouncer is a sci-fi action thriller that's cut from the same mold as the 1989 motion picture Road House, starring Patrick Swayze. The game follows the exploits, triumphs, and tragedies of a 19-year-old barroom bouncer named Sion Hazard.
As with any other bouncer, Hazard's job is to mop up the floor with out-of-control inebriated fools who can't hold their liquor and want to cause trouble at a hot club named Fate. Dominque Cross is a regular at the bar and a friend of Hazard's. While talking to Hazard at the bar, she's kidnapped by mysterious, high-tech thugs despite Hazard's valiant defense, in which he's assisted by bouncer pals Volt and Kou. This is where the game begins, with a challenge that's issued and accepted.
Each of the three bouncers specializes in his own form of martial arts. Hazard, for example, knows kung fu, but is also schooled in that not-so-secret art of using bar furniture and assorted other objects as weapons.
A good portion of the game takes place within the towers of the Mikado building. The three towers represent the three divine towers of the Imperial throne; so, don't be surprised to find quite a deep game here.
The Bouncer is one of the more impressive-looking games for the system yet; the early bits we've seen show detailed environments and fluid animation. --Todd Mowatt

PS2 The Bouncer Cheats
Alternate costumes:
Hold L1, L2, or R2 and select a person at the character select screen. This has no effect in story mode.
Hidden FMV sequence:
Complete the game as Sion.
Bonus characters:
Complete the game to unlock more characters each time that it is finished.
Increased character rank:
Every time the game is completed in story mode, the rank of the extra characters in versus and survival modes will increase. This does not include Volt, Sion, and Kou.
Leann Caldwell:
Play the entire game, only using Lou. Once you beat Duragon for the last time you will view a FMV sequence where you have to fight Leann. Beat her to unlock her in versus mode.
Topless Duragon:
Beat the game for a third time using any character. After beating Duragon for the second time, he will get up again and fight topless. Beat him to unlock him in versus mode.
Unlock Wong:
Use only Volt or Kou through the entire game. However, when you are going to fight Threw for the last time, choose Sion. When you finish the game, Sion will have a flashback. Beat Wong to unlock him in versus mode.
Kou with MSF costume:
Play through the entire game, only using Kou. Save the game after Kou enters the Mikado building as a MSF soldier. The MSF costume for Kou will now be unlocked in survival and versus modes
Sion with black hood:
Complete survival mode by beating the black-hooded version of Sion to unlock that costume in versus and survival modes.
Get Secret Bouncer:
At the main menu hold L1 and press square, square, square, circle, x, x, triangle, x to get A bouncer with the name "Unknown."

1. Double uppercut - square, square.
2. Triple kick - square, square, square.
3. Mid-air doubbble kick - circle, circle.
Volt:
1.Lightning kneel kick - left, right, down, or
up and quickly press triangle.
2.Running liriat - left, right, down, or up and
quickly press square.
3.heavy low kick- X,X.
Kou:
1.triple roundhouse kick - triangle, triangle,
triangle.
2.Triple jab - triangle, triangle, triangle.
3.Slider - right,leeeeft, down, or up, and
quickly press X.

Mixing a wide variety of genres, Dark Cloud gives fans of role-playing games between 30 and 50 hours of quality gameplay. Gamers control Toan and his motley crew as they attempt to reconstruct the world and vanquish the dark genie. In addition to hours of dungeon trekking, the game also contains elements found in simulation, puzzle, fishing, and rhythm games.
The combat system is nearly identical to the one used in Legend of Zelda games for the N64. Players choose a target to lock on, and then whale away. Between rounds of slaying monsters, players will have to strategically rebuild cities to advance. Successful fishing trips will lead to valuable weapon upgrades. Some battles test your rhythm, requiring you to match button commands, similar to such games as Um Jammer Lammy and PaRappa the Rapper. Weapon management is a vital part of the game--weapons can break if not cared for properly, but you can also transform them into powerful objects of destruction by shrewdly managing upgrades.
The multifaceted game contains an excellent tutorial to help you learn its many aspects. While it has its imperfections, Dark Cloud is the best PlayStation2 RPG to date. It's perfect for the angling adventurer that likes to dabble in urban planning. --Raymond M. Padilla

Driving Emotion Type-S (ドライビング・エモーション・タイプエス?) is a racing game developed by Escape, a subsidiary of Square. It was published in Japan on March 30, 2000 and was Square's first released for the PlayStation 2 console. After criticisms of the game's handling, the European and North American versions of the game feature revised controls and additional contents, and were released on January 26, 2001 and January 30, 2001 respectively.
The game features officially-licensed cars from international manufacturers. Several modes of playing are present, including a training mode and a two-player mode. The game's music, primarily composed by Shinji Hosoe, was published as a soundtrack in Japan. Sales for the game were low and professional reviews very mixed, with either praises or criticism of the game's graphics, controls and sounds.
The gameplay of Driving Emotion Type-S follows general conventions of racing games. The game's physics and controls intend to be realistic and are based on vehicular weight.The player competes in races with other computer controlled cars in order to unlock new cars and tracks. Car settings can be customized, as well as their colors, before each course.The game includes 43 officially-licensed cars from twelve Japanese and European manufacturers, including BMW, Toyota, Nissan, Ferrari, Porsche, and Mazda.Fourteen courses are available in total, including real and fictional ones, and one exclusive to the Western versions of the game.
There are four game modes. The "Arcade Type-S" mode is the main part of the game, and allows the play to immediately join a race. Only four cars are available at the beginning of the game, but as the player wins more races, more cars and tracks are unlocked.The "Line Training" mode enables the player to try out any of the tracks and improve their driving techniques, without any computer-controlled car. An ideal racing line is shown in red on the track and becomes jagged when the suggested braking points are approached.This mode features four autocross tracks that do not feature in the other modes. A "Time Attack" and split-screen two-player "Vs Mode" fill out the gameplay.

DISNEY’S DONALD DUCK: Goin’ Quackers is the first platforming game out for the PlayStation 2. Developed by Ubi Soft, it combines classic platforming action with Disney flair. There are over 20 single-player levels, featuring a variety of locations, from forests to mansions. The game takes full advantage of the PlayStation 2’s graphical capability by rendering complete 3D environments and animated characters.
Each level appears in bright and vibrant detail, forming a sort of 3D tableau. Donald also appears just as he would in a cartoon or movie, thanks to the numerous frames of animation for each of his actions. Donald and his co-stars also sound as if they were coming straight out of a movie, due to the full voice acting for each character. DISNEY’S DONALD DUCK: Goin’ Quackers is a basic platformer, with the classic Disney twist providing an experience that resembles an interactive cartoon.

Daisy, a television journalist, has gone to Merlock's castle for an unannounced interview. Merlock doesn't appreciate Daisy's in-your-face interview tactics and holds her hostage while he comes up with a plan to take over the world. So, it's up to Donald Duck to rescue Daisy in Goin' Quackers.
The game gives players instructions as they progress through the levels. When you come to something new, Donald's nephews explain what's going on. While not having to read an instruction book is nice, the game explains so many simple concepts from the beginning that this feature hinders more than it helps. For instance, gift boxes contain power-ups. Power-ups are good. You should get them.
The game's graphics quality varies greatly throughout. For example, some of the buildings show great detail while, in another area, it can be difficult to tell whether you're facing a cliff or a thorny plant. Also, while Donald is superbly animated, the game's many textures look grainy compared to those of other PS2 titles.
The sound, on the other hand, is spot on. The sound effects are also pleasantly cartoon-like, but the voices are annoying, especially Donald's.
Experienced gamers will blow through this one, assuming they want to, and younger gamers will find the game sufficiently challenging and fun. But gamers young and old will agree: There's nothing to like about Donald's new voice. --Todd Mowatt
